Our sight words are: up, what, she, take, play

In math, we will continue exploring doubles +1 and doubles -1, adding and 10 and adding more.

Have a safe and happy Halloween.

October Birthdays - Happy Birthday, Avery!!

Week of October 15, 2012

We are already at the half way point in the month of October! We are really enjoying our new math program and the tools that go with it. We will be taking our second math test this week and beginning Chapter 3. This chapter continues learning and exploring addition and subtraction.

Our Reading Street story is Farmer's Market. We have noticed that our stories are getting longer now and we are reading more and more.

The sight words for this week are: for, go, me, here, where. The sounds we are reviewing are: u, q, v, y and z.

A good way for your child to practice sight word reading is a tool you can download to your computer called Sightword Buddy. You can download it free at this site: http://www.quiz-tree.com/sight-words-buddy.html

I have used this game/tool in the past and students enjoy using it.

Looking forward to another great week!

Welcome Back 2012

I want to welcome you to First Grade!

We had a very good first week of school! It was busy and filled with learning-- how to line up for lunch, how to play safely on the playground, where to go for fire drills, where to line up for dismissal, etc., etc., etc.

We will continue to work on all those procedures as the weeks go on, but we will begin our reading and math this week.

Reading   Our focus is What is around us at home? We will review the letters and sounds of m, s, t and a. Our story is Sam.

Math   We will begin our new math program this week. Our focus will be how you can model adding within 10.

We will be doing some diagnostic testing for the next week or two in addition to math and reading.

Thank you for your patience in the first week of dropping off and picking up your child.

I look forward to another great week in first grade!
